There-Phase Test Separator

General:

Three‑phase test separator is core pressure‑vessel equipment for oil & gas and petrochemical industries, designed to separate well‑stream multiphase fluid into three independent outputs: natural gas, crude oil and produced water within one unit. The three‑phase separators complete gas‑oil‑water simultaneous separation, eliminating extra secondary liquid‑liquid separation procedures. Our equipment has been deployed for many overseas projects, delivering stable separation performance under complex on‑site working conditions.

Available configurations: horizontal, vertical, skid‑mounted modular package. Horizontal type is preferred for high‑liquid‑volume scenarios; vertical version suits high‑gas‑rate, limited‑footprint sites; skid‑mounted design enables fast installation, commissioning and relocation for remote oilfields.

Its main components include inlet nozzle, inlet diverter, gas section, mist extractor (demister pad), oil section, water section, weir plate, level control valve (LCV), pressure safety valve (PSV), pressure gauge (PG), temperature gauge (TG), and drain & blowdown valve.

Working Principle:

Produced well fluid flows into the unit via the inlet nozzle. The inlet diverter lowers fluid velocity and redirects flow. Driven by gravity and density differences, gas rises to the top, oil forms the middle layer, and water sinks to the bottom. The mist extractor eliminates liquid droplets from gas streams. The level controller keeps stable liquid‑phase interfaces. Afterwards, gas, oil and water are discharged through respective outlets to flare/flow line, storage/process line and disposal/treatment line.

It delivers critical functions: enabling accurate well testing, measuring oil‑gas‑water output, safeguarding downstream equipment, avoiding liquid carry‑over and stabilizing flow before fluids go to flare or storage.

Winning Petro three‑phase separators realize multiphase separation mainly based on gravity settling principle, assisted by inlet diversion, coalescing internals, demister and weir plate structure.

  1. Primary separation zone: Raw multiphase fluid flows into vessel via inlet diverter/cyclonic inlet device. Sudden velocity drop and flow direction change release large‑volume free gas, most liquid drops fall under gravity.

  2. Gravity settling & oil‑water separation zone: Mixed liquid flows into settling chamber. Due to density difference, crude oil floats upward while produced water sinks to vessel bottom. Coalescing plates merge tiny oil/water droplets to accelerate phase stratification. Weir plates maintain stable oil‑water interface for independent oil and water discharge.

  3. Gas purification zone: The released gas passes through mist extractor (demister pad) to remove entrained fine liquid droplets before discharging from gas outlet.

  4. Automatic control system: Level transmitters, interface controllers, pressure sensors and safety valves monitor vessel status in real‑time, regulating oil, water outlet flow and internal working pressure to guarantee stable continuous operation.

Key safety design: The unit integrates over‑pressure protection, emergency shutdown and high/low‑level alarm functions to mitigate typical risks including overpressure, foaming, emulsion disturbance, liquid carry‑over and interface offset in petrochemical production.

Application Scenarios:

Common application scenarios cover well‑testing activities, production facilities, surface testing packages, early production systems and oil‑gas processing plants. Its typical upstream flow path is: Wellhead → Choke Manifold → Line Heater → Three‑Phase Separator. It is operated by well‑testing operators, production operators, process engineers and surface well‑test crews. Reliable separation performance provides precise production data and guarantees operational safety.
